Hawaii telescope sees planet-forming disk around a star–Interesting article.

Young Americans are at a huge risk for STDs due to blatant stupidity–Something tells me that not many INTJs have STDs… These young people ask “why did this happen to me?” How can they not understand how they got an STD if they chose not to use protection? Are these people so incredibly stupid that they cannot go and get tested for STDs? Completely irrational…

Who steps on toothpicks?–I can understand how someone could step on a rusty nail but a toothpick?! What kind of parents just throw toothpicks on the floor anyway? Do they have parties where they skewer cheese and when the party is over they just toss the toothpicks into the floor? Bleh, people are stupid!

After speaking with a woman in my garden club today, I was informed of why I did not win a ribbon for my Doritaenopsis orchid. She spoke with her friend who is a judge and she told her the reasons. The first reason is that it had too many mature flowers on it with no buds. The second reason is that it is not a recognized hybrid with the AOS. At least next year I will know to trim off some of the flowers, not force complete budding, and to pick something recognized by the AOS… Bad me. ;)

I had garden club earlier today. Our club has the opportunity to go on a tour of 50 gardens in England. I hope that I am able to go but due to the situation with my grandmother, I question whether it will be possible.

My grandmother is finally moving into the hospice this week. That is good news in one way and bad news because she is going there to die. It is hard to come to terms with someone being ok one day and then going through the process of dying the very next day. I thought I was not going to get very upset about it and I thought I could be rational about it. However, I cannot. I am finally breaking down and coming to terms with it all. I guess I always took it for granted that my grandmothers would always be here. They have both been a big part of my life. Both of my grandparents followed my parents around wherever we decided to live. They did it because they wanted to be important people in my life and in my parent’s lives. It is just upsetting and difficult to come to terms with the fact that she is going to die soon. I know everyone and everything has to die at some point (except some plants) but that does not make it easier. It is bizarre to have a conversation with someone who knows they are dying. Everything seems to revolve around her starting every sentence with, “When I die…” Everyone in my life that has died has always gone suddenly. When that happens, you are not forced to deal with the process of dying. You only have to deal with the loss of the person and your own grief. She has lived a very long life and seems to have little regret in her life. I think she is just ready to die. I just wish for her sake that it did not have to be such a painful death. She watched my grandfather die of cancer many years ago and he died such a horrible and painful death. She has always said that cancer robbed him of the dignity he deserved at the end of his life. I can only hope that it will not do that to her.

A funny side note…

My grandmother (the crazy one) attended the flower show with me today. She also just came back from a trip to San Luis Obispo, CA. She told me that she would bring me something back from San Luis Obispo. She brings me back a cookbook that pertains to Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara is over 100 miles away from San Luis Obispo… The fact that it is a cookbook on cooking seafood is even more humorous given that I am a vegetarian. She still thinks vegetarian means “person who eats meat” after all these years.

On a bad note and a more personal one, my other grandmother is dying of cancer. The cancer is spreading all over her body and right now, it is on her shoulder, lungs, and the lymph nodes in her chest. The doctor says that she has about six months to live. She is not even able to receive surgery or chemotherapy due to her current health. She can receive radiation but even that will only prolong her life for one year. She has opted not to receive treatment. She has lost a great deal of weight over the last few months. Of course, she only weighed about 98 pounds before this all started. She is down to 78 pounds and continues to lose about two pounds per week. If she continues at the rate of two pounds per week, I do not see how she could survive longer than another two months or less. This is a horrible time for my family.

I received an Honorable Mention ribbon at the flower show for my mass arrangement. This is the first mass arrangement I have done in a large-scale flower show so I am rather pleased with my results. I did not think I would get any ribbons for it. I received positive comments from all the judges and I am happy about my honorable mention ribbon. The orchid judging surprised everyone. The best orchids were surprisingly not the ones that were picked for ribbons. The judges seemed to favor very small plants with only one bloom on the stem. They also did not seem to mind dead leaves, diseased orchids, and orchids that were seriously under watered and malnourished. I am still baffled. Therefore, I did not get a ribbon for my orchid. At least I am in good company, all of the people that should have won ribbons did not get them either. I have decided that next year I will be doing another mass arrangement, a mailbox garden, and a larger number of horticulture specimens.

Tomorrow I will begin sowing the seeds for my vegetable garden. I cannot wait to plant them and start growing something…anything, for that matter. More news to follow later…

FBI gets into the fight on piracy.

I am disturbed by the fact that the FBI considers piracy to be the third most important priority under terrorism and counter-intelligence. Is murder no longer a problem in this country? I hardly think cracking down on 12-year-old kids with a DVD burner should be a top priority in the country. They are putting a hefty value on this media. Five years in jail and $250K seems steep for some kid who is sharing songs on the internet. Is the entertainment industry hurting that badly? Alternatively, is it just artists that are terrible who are not making money?

Empathy is scientifically proven.

This article is quite interesting…

I am so elated now. I have not really spoken about the memory problems I had been having. I theorize that they were the result of coming out of the depression that I had for so long. As soon as I was no longer depressed, some of my memories almost seemed to be behind a wall and I could never really reach them. However, I had a very large breakthrough today when I randomly began recalling all of the things I had intermittently strived to recall. I am so excited that I can now recall everything that I once did with accuracy and precision. I feel so much better to know that that issue is behind me.
