Penguins

December 15, 2006

When I spoke to my Mom earlier in the day she mentioned that a friend who worked in a school where a young autistic boy took a penguin from the new aquarium in Atlanta while on a fieldtrip. Apparently, he was able to jump into the tank and take a penguin and then stash it in his backpack. He got on the school bus wet but apparently no one said anything. When he arrived home, his mother opened up his backpack and found the penguin alive and looking back at her. She then took the penguin and put it in the car and called the aquarium and said she was on the way and would be bringing the penguin with her. Apparently, this did not make the news which I thought was somewhat surprising… It did make me wonder how often these sorts of things happen at the zoo or aquariums around the world. It is rather funny and disturbing that no one thought about why a little boy was wet after visiting the aquarium…

DSL Install

December 14, 2006

A little while ago, I installed DSL (Damn Small Linux) on an older machine that I have and wish to use as a testbed for various things…  It’s really an interesting distro - I like that it takes about 1 minute to get it up and going.  It seems very fast and efficient but I don’t think I would ever use it as my primary machine.  But it is darn impressive that they manage to get the OS *and* a ton of apps in under 50 mb…  Anyone know of any impressive niche versions of Linux out there that they recommend?

Tired

December 13, 2006

I was exhausted last night when I went to sleep and I did not wake up until 11 AM or so…  I had to get up very early the day before so that I could proctor the exam for Brian’s class very early in the morning.

I also have watched a few movies too:  The Devil Wears Prada, The DaVinci Code, etc.  I really liked The Devil Wears Prada and The DaVinci Code was okay but not great…

Brian is still in LA and apparently he is going to the Lakers game with his Dad.  Brian says he is going to bring me a Kobe ball for our anniversary.  I’m not entirely sure what that is but I am pretty sure I do not want it.  :P  I did purchase Brian’s anniversary presents but none of them have arrived yet (yikes!) and our anniversary is coming up soon on the Winter Solstice.

My fast/diet thing is going OK.  I was sick to my stomach and did not feel well but now I am taking some probiotics and I seem to feel okay.  However, I am getting sick of eating only steamed broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and zucchini with lemon and drinking only water and green tea. The worst part is the shakes - the green shake that tastes faintly like blueberries is okay but I only have to drink that once a day.  The really nasty shake - the one that is chalky and gritty with a horrid smell really tastes quite disgusting.  Oddly enough, adding berries just makes it worse…

I have sound!

December 11, 2006

I finally got my sound to work by some small miracle.  Alsa is cracked out and I had to do a whole bunch of crap to get it to work. YaST was of no help…  I nearly peed in my pants when it finally *did* work it was so incredibly loud.  I ended up using gamix (GTK alsa mixer) and it finally got the settings just right.  The sound is decent enough and I am just happy to have it now.

Earlier, my mouse was going insane.  Ahh, the trials and tribulations of a GUI.  My SuSE machine is now great…

Tired

Brian and I got up very early this morning so he could catch his 6:43 AM flight to Honolulu so he could go to LA.  Even though it is only 10:42 it is already a long day!  My fasting diet (whatever it is) is making me ill and tired.  I am not sure why but I continue to drink lots of water and green tea.

One should not tinker with Linux when they are exhausted and ill.  I accidentally (OK, on purpose because I was not paying attention) deleted a number of packages that relied on alsa because I decided to reinstall alsa (what was I thinking?)…  Fortunately, I realized what I was doing and had to fix everything via the fail-safe command line (GNOME was not even usable - go me).  Now, I am still trying to correct everything AND fix my stupid sound.  I still don’t understand why the sound is being such a bear…

Sound and DVDs

December 9, 2006

With Brian going out of town next week I am sufficiently motivated to get the sound working on my Linux machine.  I did buy a new Sound Blaster card for my machine but YaST is rather broken in SuSe 10.1 and I’ve been having problems with it anyway - mostly because I haven’t had time to play with it.  At any rate, I did get my DVD player up and working with Ogle - and I like it.  Dan mentioned I should try Mplayer - I think I will take a look at that too.  So far, I pretty much like SuSe but I think I will try some other distros on my other servers.  It could be a lot of fun, I think.

Apparently, lack of sound is pretty common with SuSe 10.1 but so far I have not found the fix I need.

Stocks

December 6, 2006

I just installed a new plugin for Firefox - it is a stock ticker in the browser and I love it. It lets me watch my stocks and how much they are up/down and how much money they are currently worth to me based on my number of shares. This plugin is great! Brian keeps telling me not to be a day trader (and I’m not) but I like to follow our stocks because I think it is fun and interesting and one SHOULD follow their investments and not ignore them.

Check out the Firefox plugin here: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/183/

Fasting

December 1, 2006

I am doing a medically supervised fast - well a kind of fast, sort of…  Anyway, I am basically drinking 3 protein vitamin shakes per day, a vegetable/fiber shake, and drinking lots of green tea (4 cups a day) and unsweetened cranberry juice diluted with water, and up to 4 cups of low-carb vegetables (broccoli, squash, carrots, etc) and fruit (raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, etc.) per day.  Fortunately, I’m not hungry and I feel pretty good (probably because of the caffeine in the green tea).

Brian called me at 8 AM today to come and pick him up at work to change his clothes.  I thought it was a mini-emergency - like someone puked on his clothes or someone spilled something on him.  But no, it turns out that he was worried about how he would look on camera for the TV crew.  They rescheduled so he changed his clothes and shaved in vain.  It was rather humorous…
