Body Boarding
March 18, 2007
Yesterday, Brian and I went to the body board shop of his colleague’s boyfriend and I found a new board. I really like it - it’s a Mike Stewart Science board in blue. I had fun with it down at Honolii Beach yesterday too. I did end up with a busted lip and scraped knees but I had a blast. Apparently, the day before a whale had died off the coast and 14 ft. sharks were seen eating it - I found this out when I was already in the water. ;) The absolute coolest part was being able to surf with some turtles - apparently they really like to surf at Honolii - they are really cute too. It was great…

So, do you stand or lie down on a body board? Which one is Honolii Beach? Did you get pictures of the sea turtles? After our encounter with them last time, I have a new favorite animal after dogs. I got a hand carved one off of ebay that I really like, too. Maybe I’ll collect them. Did Brian go with you? Did he take pictures?

You mostly lie on the board but I did see some people standing on them. Brian’s colleague that I went with actually can stand on the board. Honolii Beach is the beach that is closest to us - the black sand beach. It’s actually really nice. I was always kind of scared to go down there because I thought it was a “locals only” kind of place but it definitely was not - everyone was really friendly and nice. They had full facilities and two lifeguards too. I love the turtles - they are so friendly. The ones I saw yesterday seemed really comfortable around people and they looked like they were having a lot of fun surfing the waves. Brian didn’t go - he took a power nap instead. He still won’t get in the water. Honolii has a river current that cuts across the beach so when you first get in the water is really cold but it gets a lot better once you swim out of the current. That would be enough to deter Brian right away. If I convinced him to go with me sometime he might actually take some pictures… When you come to visit I have an extra body board if you would like to give it a try - it’s a lot of fun!

Yes, I’d like that, but be sure to remind me to take off my glasses!

When I lived back in NY, we used to body board, or boogie board, similar sport. I recall that you could kneel on the boards as well.
All this talk of surf makes me want to head up to the Ocoee to do some more rafting! Heck just put some paddle-powered craft on some body of water somewhere.

Body boarding and boogie boarding are essentially the same thing. The term boogie board is used to refer to the old school Morey boards that were originally made. Morey was said to appear as though he was doing a “boogie” or dance on the water - thus the rudimentary boards were created. The sport became much bigger and the boards became better and so the name was changed. More than you wanted to know, I’m sure… You can kneel or even stand on a body board but those tricks take time and I certainly can’t do either of those things…
