Harry Potter Party

July 22, 2007

Brian and I attended the Harry Potter Party at our local Border’s store.  It was interesting.  We waited from 8 PM until about 1:30 AM to get our book.  We had fun seeing all the little kids play the games - they had a Harry Potter spelling bee, the Great Snape Debate (Friend or Foe), a costume contest, and some other stuff…  We sat down in the foreign language section and read our books and walked around.  Then we went through a monstrous queue of people that did not make sense but in the end we got our book, some glow sticks, and a poster.  We also picked up an interesting Chinese book and a Vegetarian Sushi book for me.

We really did not try to read the book until yesterday - and even then we were trying to share.  Being an only child, I am not very good at sharing (Brian is not either but he claims to be good at sharing) - basically, it ended up being that neither of us got much time with the book.  So, last night I read the book from 12:30 - 3 AM and finished it.  It was a quick and easy read but I found it somewhat disappointing, really.  I knew I needed to read it anyway and get it out of my system because it would have been too distracting otherwise.  At any rate, now I am finished with Harry Potter & Sherlock Holmes - the latter of which saddens me.  However, I have since moved on to more scholarly works such as D.H. Lawrence’s The Rainbow.  I am enjoying it already.

If anyone comes across any scholarly works pertaining to Sherlock Holmes or at least something more than fan fiction (I detest fan fiction.) please let me know.

Mauna Kea and other news

July 17, 2007

On Sunday, Brian and I spent the day hiking on Mauna Kea at about 10,000 feet.  It was also misting, foggy, and about 55 degrees.  We had a great time but were completely exhausted after we finished hiking.  Altitude hiking really takes it out of you…

Brian’s parents are coming to visit next week and we should all have a lot of fun hiking, doing water activities, etc.

Also, Brian has decided to go to China for a year to work at a university there.  That should be interesting.

More later - I’m too sleepy to function properly at the moment.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

July 11, 2007

Brian and I went to the first showing of the latest Harry Potter movie and we really enjoyed it.  It was definitely a darker movie with less *fun* magic and more defensive magic…  Brian said he liked this movie the best compared to the previous movies.  It was definitely shorter and more condensed but also more to the point about Voldemort’s return.  The end of the movie was a big “duh” as Cornelius Fudge essentially realizes Voldemort is back - you know, when he is standing right in front of his face.

When termites attack…

July 6, 2007

Last night, we were attempting to watch Sherlock Holmes (The 6 Napoleons) when termites started coming through the windows and began swarming around the television.  Of course, we had to turn everything off but then more and more started coming into my work studio.  We had to kill them one by one while they attempted to get into everything.  Brian was also spraying poison everywhere (yuck).  On top of that, we had to sit in the living room in the dark for three hours afterwards because they kept coming.  We played Gin by citronella candlelight.  We thought we were safe since the living room is not usually a room they come into - but not this time.  Brian kept feeling things on his legs - we both thought we were being paranoid but we turned on the light and saw a ton of wingless termites crawling on the carpet.  We promptly used the cards to throw them into the candle flame.  Today, we will be spending the day making sure they did not infiltrate all my fabric.  Fun.  Our housekeeper was just here on the 4th and now the house is already in disrepair.  Yuck.

Phone Company

July 5, 2007

After screwing up our original order to upgrade our phone services four times Hawaiian Telcom had finally gotten everything corrected.  Then they screwed up our phone line while actually installing the new services such that we could not even receive calls.  After I got that straightened out then Brian said he required a cell phone.  We went to get him a cell phone which was all fine and good except Hawaiian Telcom could not add him to the phone account because we do not have the same last name.  They said it is impossible to put two people on the account with different last names and that we were the first to ask for it.  So, they apparently invented a policy.  Seriously, what kind of phone company has never had two married people with different last names call to get both names on the account?  What about people who live together?  Or are gay?  Insanity.

Living in Hawaii

July 4, 2007

It is really quite odd living in Hawaii.  When I lived on the mainland I was very interested in politics and was very concerned about domestic and foreign issues.  I have found that living in Hawaii has really changed my level of interest in world politics.  We really do live in our own little isolated world here.  Brian reads the news more often than I do so he tends to keep me abreast of world politics.  Occasionally, something he mentions piques my interest and I look into it more.  But frankly, security here is relaxed and our way of living is just not bothered by terrorism and all of the other things that people worry about living on the mainland.  We are so far removed from living like that - it’s like living in a pre-911 society, really.  I think I am done rambling…
