When termites attack…

July 6, 2007

Last night, we were attempting to watch Sherlock Holmes (The 6 Napoleons) when termites started coming through the windows and began swarming around the television.  Of course, we had to turn everything off but then more and more started coming into my work studio.  We had to kill them one by one while they attempted to get into everything.  Brian was also spraying poison everywhere (yuck).  On top of that, we had to sit in the living room in the dark for three hours afterwards because they kept coming.  We played Gin by citronella candlelight.  We thought we were safe since the living room is not usually a room they come into - but not this time.  Brian kept feeling things on his legs - we both thought we were being paranoid but we turned on the light and saw a ton of wingless termites crawling on the carpet.  We promptly used the cards to throw them into the candle flame.  Today, we will be spending the day making sure they did not infiltrate all my fabric.  Fun.  Our housekeeper was just here on the 4th and now the house is already in disrepair.  Yuck.

  1. I thought that building outside your back window was supposed to eliminate the termite problem. No? Well then, it’s time to import a new predator, foreign to Hawaii…an anteater! Do you suppose that anteaters will feast on coqui frogs? Hey, speaking of frogs, I thought they were supposed to eat flying insects. Maybe if you put some coqui frogs in your fountain, and then entice the termites to do a suicide run into the fountain…Whatever you do, be certain to have it taken care of before the 25th.

  2. We thought the construction would take care of it too but it seems that the termites were always in the vacant lot next door. They probably migrated when all of that construction started. Unfortunately, the person that owns the lot next door never takes care of the property and they never visit it. Brian and I were thinking that the county government should spend money eradicating termites instead of coqui frogs - that way they can sell the solution to everyone else and make some money for the state. The termites should be gone by the time you guys arrive!

  3. I thought termites weren’t too keen on being in fresh air or the light. I hope they’re not gnawing away at your house!

  4. You must be thinking of subterranean termites… These termites live above ground and (as far as I know) are inactive during the day then at night they come out and look for light because they need water and shelter to mate so they can colonize in tunnels they make in the wood. Fortunately, our house is made of redwood so I don’t foresee them eating it anytime soon. They are weird little bugs though.
