Update
November 12, 2007
I have not posted in a while because things have been quite hectic here. I am flying to Honolulu this week to spend a couple of days with my parents, go shopping, and visit Pearl Harbor before they come back to the Big Island to stay with us and have a rousing Thanksgiving. I have also been planning the trip that Brian and I are taking to Kaua’i in December. In addition to all of that, I have been preparing for various exhibitions that I will be at later this month and December. I am also in the midst of rehab for my knee which the physical therapist says that I will most likely need surgery to correct.
On Friday, Brian dropped me off in town (Hilo) and I walked around while he went to Honoka’a. I finally went to the Pacific Tsunami Museum - it was great. I also went to the Kress Cinema downtown ($1 theater) after I walked several miles and saw the Mr. Bean movie - bad, very bad… I spent time in Kalakaua Park and had a lovely afternoon.
We also went up to Mauna Kea in hopes of seeing snow but it had already melted. The standouts of the evening were seeing the Milky Way, Jupiter, and a string of comets. The last time we were up there with Brian’s parents we got to see the International Space Station move across the sky. Mauna Kea really is the finest place in the world to stargaze (obviously).
While hiking at Kalopa State Park, Brian and I ended up on a pig trail and both got stung by bees. I lost all feeling in my leg and bottom that evening and then slept for about 16 hours because of the bee sting. It has been over two weeks now and I still have pain and redness from the sting. Brian got stung on his back but he is doing fine.
I have been reading a large number of books on the economics of the poor - very interesting reading… I will talk about that in a later post.
Brian and I have been watching StarGate SG-1 now that we have finished Star Trek Voyager. It is unique and interesting…

Sounds like you had a bit of fun… We’ve been busy here as well. We found an apartment in Sandy Springs and plan to be moving in January. 1,350 sq ft, sun-room, huge living room and bedrooms, and the best part is, the kitchen is gigantic! Eat-in type, with L-shaped counter. I’m planning on buying a rolling island to place in the center for added workspace. The whole place will be renovated by the time we move in too, so everything should be brand new. Elaine and I are picking colors for accent walls and such. I’m also picking out new office furniture. So there’ll be a good trip to Ikea.
Hope you have fun with your trips!

That’s great! You guys found a new place really quickly… Sandy Springs is a really nice area - you guys will be near the Sunflower Cafe and Whole Foods (envy!). It sounds like the kitchen will work out much better for you - I’m hoping to add some additional functionality with our new kitchen island which will make its debut in one week! I wish we had an Ikea - I want one of the platform beds they sell. They do ship to Hawaii now but only via UPS - they may as well not even ship here with those shipping prices.
And thanks, I will definitely try to have fun with all the travel - I’m looking forward to it! Good luck with the move!

Hey, back again from shitty school teamwork.
I’ve bitched a lot about canadian education, but people coming at my uni from other countries all suck as a general rule. Their school system is just not on par. For example, some students have never written something longer than 2 pages… No kidding!
Makes you wonder why our unis let them in, but the answer is simple : they pay 5 times my tuition. Of course, at the cost of lowering uni standards, and pissing off the bright students.
Funny you mention Voyager, I used to watch it when I was in college and didn’t want to work.. I thought it had a good start, but then it faded and started sucking hard when they decided to pussy up Chicote, the Borg, and bring in 7 of 9’s big boobs. They had great actors though. I mainly remember that episode in the future when some aliens have their history the wrong way and think Harry Kim is a badass who beats up his captives during interrogation.

Welcome back, Seifer! Sorry to hear that school has been a drag lately. How can they get through school without writing something longer than two pages? I think I did that in first grade…
I thought Voyager was stupid in the beginning but when they brought 7 of 9 in it raised the quality of the show. Brian thinks 7’s personality is a lot like mine (maybe that is why I like her) but clearly, Brian just likes her for her boobs. Chakote was always a weak character - the writers never really seemed to figure out who he was - sometimes he was a Native American / spiritual guy who is all about pacifism and then he randomly wants to kill a whole bunch of people (he’s a Maquis!)and then all of a sudden he’s a guy who knows a lot about temporal mechanics (huh?). I do like the Borg - they strive for what I strive for (perfection!) and I love the Borg Queen - she has my ideal job! I never liked Janeway - she was completely illogical the whole way through. She always seemed to make crazy decisions and feigned Prime Directive fever, then she would randomly would act crazy (like when she let the weird alien creatures attack the crewmen as a form of torture to get him to talk).
I have heard that people that like Voyager are divided into two camps - the camp that liked it Seasons 1-3 and the camp that liked it Seasons 3-7 (I’m the latter).

Thanks!
They get through *their* shitty school, and manage to get in ours because they pay $$$$. Don’t ever lead a team of losers, you’ll do all the work. Problem is, there are lots of losers in comp science.
Yeah they all like 7 of 9 for her boobs.
Chakote should have stayed tough.. The actor actually bitched a lot about it.
The Borg should have stayed scary and not get their asses fried by species 487whatever. The Borg queen was cool, she should have stayed that way too.
By the way, check this out :

You might say I’m also drawn to the stars. Amateur astronomy is one of my hobbies. I look forward to the experience of visiting Mauna Kea, Haleakala, Mauna Loa and other observatories in your area. There’s always hidden meaning to be uncovered in our own tendancies and habits. If you like Star Strek, there’s likely more to that appeal than you realize.

I did check out the youtube video - I actually posted that a month or two ago! I like the guy’s argument - it is certainly valid and I would hope that arguments like that would finally sway people who refuse to see the reality of global warming…
I am not sure how stargazing on Haleakala would be - it’s not nearly as high as Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea and they don’t have facilities at the top. The only place with actual observatories is Mauna Kea (they also have a star gazing program open to the public). Mauna Loa actually has a weather observatory at the end of a very nasty 20 mile road. All of the mountains/volcanoes, especially Mauna Kea, have great cultural significance as well.
