When Grendel Attacks!

January 19, 2008

We went to see Beowulf this evening at the theater.  Such outings make me long for the culture of a large metropolitan city.  Nonetheless, this foray into “entertainment” was my idea. We read the critical reviews of the movie and it seemed like it was well received by both critics and the common folk.  This movie was so terrible it was like watching 300 meets Shrek.  I actually enjoyed both of those films but Beowulf is not intended to be a comedy.  They glossed over everything of relevance to the story and created a nude scene with a proverbial fig leaf when Beowulf fought Grendel.  The worst thing about the movie is that it was animated but not in a way that enhanced the film - like 300. All in all, I am glad that we only spent two dollars watching that movie.  Unfortunately, we wasted two hours of our lives that we will never get back…

  1. It says Beowulf has 7 nominations on IMDB. It’s probably “blog awards” and “livejournal awards”.
300 was entertaining but I thought it borrowed a lot from Brave Heart. I would have liked the spear to hit that fag face in the ending.

By the way, unrelated question : how old are teens when they finish high school in the states?

  2. Long time no see - welcome back!

That really was the *worst* movie I’ve seen in a long time! I can’t believe that it has any nominations on IMDB nor can I believe that the critics gave it somewhat positive reviews. A real Viking style epic deserves real people who are dirty and gross looking and not some CGI modified buff and clean looking Beowulf…

Teens tend to be about 17 or 18 when they finish high school in the US. What about Canada?

  3. Thanks thanks. I was busy with my shittiest semester. But now things are back to good.

Movies are bound to suck more as we get older. It’s like history and politics, most people forget what happened 2 years ago, so the same crap will happen now with a fresh look.

In Canada we have 5 years of high school so it’s 16-17. But after that we have 2 years of “pre university”.

By the way, speaking of art, a close friend of mine has written a novella, and if you have time, I’d like your take on it. I know it’s good, the few (reliable)people who’ve read it all loved it. The only doubts are whether it can reach a broad audience, as it’s somewhat unconventional. It’s a quick 120 pages. Interested? I’ll give you more details if you want.

  4. I am definitely interested to read your friend’s novella. It seems like most mainstream books are either romance novels or murder mysteries (or some combination of both). I guess that is what most people read? What is your friend’s novella about?

  5. Cool!
I have no idea what’s in the mainstream, you tell me. I think any genre can be entertaining though, it’s all in the way you tell the story.
The novella is about a 17-year-old cynical girl with a fucked up family. Hmm do you have an email I can send it to?

  6. I really have little idea about what is going on with the general population. I just know that most bookstores sell the murder/romance books in abundance and it seems to be what sells these days. This concept does require me to believe that most people read books though…

The novella sounds interesting… My email is katy-at-pigonastick.net
