Rain, Rain, Go Away…
February 4, 2008
Rain is generally welcome here in Hilo. After all, Hilo is the rainiest city in the world. However, about nine inches of rain fell here last night and it continues to fall day after day. It is insane.
While getting gas on Saturday morning, before taking a trip to Kona, we noticed that part of Kamehameha Ave was closed but it was not flooded. I heard the radio announcements from the Civil Defense and they said Kamehameha Ave was closed today. I really could thought it couldn’t be all that bad since we were just there yesterday. But wow, it is horrible.
Many people have flooded homes and businesses from all this rain. I really cannot even believe this is happening here - it is too surreal. Fortunately, our little neighborhood is fine. The lower part of our backyard is a filled with water but it is far away from the house. Also, we have a giant torrent of water rushing down to the ocean which is making a great deal of noise. I am always able to hear the waves of the ocean at night but not lately… I think if someone stepped into the drainage ditch behind the house they would take a quick trip down to the ocean and would most likely not be seen or heard from again. The current is extremely swift and dangerous.
Here are a couple of photos:

Crimony, I can hardly believe that’s going on over there. Please stay safe. It’s finally dripping over here in Kona today too, but so far nothing like that.
I’ve been hearing from a lot of different people how weird the weather is here this year, so COLD over here this winter. Maybe a mainland person would snort at this, but for us really it’s quite perceptible.
Aloha

It really has been very cold this year in Hilo. I’m told it is because of dry tradewinds and it creates a wind chill. We live across the street from the ocean at about 100 ft elevation and it has dipped into the 50s at night. They still don’t sell heated blankets around here though!
Enjoy the warmer & dryer Kona weather!

Here we got snow and it’s -20, so quit complaining
Hey Katy, who are you voting for?
By the way, did you get my email?

That’s normal for Canada though! It’s not normal to have massive flooding here. :-p
I will most likely be voting for Clinton. However, I would be really interested to see a Clinton/Obama ticket come November…
I did receive your email - I’ve read part of the story so far…

Exactly! That’s the problem : it’s normal.
Yeah this election is cool. We’re either gonna see a black or female president. Who knows, that might make a difference compared to previous presidents.
Good, keep me posted.

Rain is always welcome in Australia. I live in an area which has experienced drought in recent years. It makes sense not to take what you have for granted. Water may come in drops or buckets, and whatever way it comes, its a blessing.

It is hard to imagine the rain that causes massive flooding as being a blessing.
