Too Young for Birth Control?

October 17, 2007

ABC has an article on How Young Is Too Young for Birth Control; the article highlights a proposal to give birth control to sexually active kids at a middle school in Maine. The school is already giving out condoms to these teens.

Apparently, Maine has a law that says you cannot have sex under age 14. I would wager a guess that Maine also has laws that say you cannot drive over the speed limit (at any age) but I would imagine that many people break that law. I do not think that I should have to point out that people don’t always follow the rules - especially hormonal teenagers.

But that is the real crux - this is a middle school - not all of these kids are even teenagers, they are pre-teens. However, if these kids are choosing to have sex then it is crucial that they are given access to birth control. They should definitely be choosing condoms over birth control to prevent disease and pregnancy. At least someone is there to educate these kids on proper birth control and disease prevention methods.

The students will need to have their parents permission to access any of the services offered by the health center. Many of the parents seem to be up in arms about this because they view the school as enablers of sexual activity. These kids would probably engage in sexual activity without protection just like many adults and not think of the consequences until later.

I think the real questions are: Would you want your child to die of AIDS? Would you want your child’s education to be over at age 11?

If you say yes, you should have your children taken away from you. If you say no, then you should support access to birth control.

They should probably start thinking about why their kids want to have sex at age 11. I think it would be wise to offer some kind of counseling to understand why these kids want to have sex at age 11.

Arrest for Poor Yard Maintenance, Airline Passenger Rights, and Soft Drinks Make You Fat

It would seem that you can be arrested for a misdemeanor in some parts of California for letting your grass turn brown. That is exactly what happened to a seventy year old woman. She was not only arrested but she was bloodied and bruised by the police. Seriously, I saw the picture of the woman, how much fight could she really have put up? The police must have been nuts! Furthermore, I had no idea you could be arrested for not maintaining your yard. In any neighborhood my parents have lived in, in Georgia, they would just put a lien against someone’s house if they violated the neighborhood covenants or sue them. But jail time for a brown lawn? Give me a break.

Some airline passenger activists are pushing Congress to pass a bill of rights for airline passengers so they do not have to wait on planes for longer than three hours. They setup a mock airplane to show what it would be like to sit in a cramped and hot space with screaming babies and testy people. This story forces me to recall a European plane that sat on the tarmac in Washington (could be wrong) for 24 or more and the a/c was not working, the bathrooms were full, they had no food, etc. I thought Brian and I had it bad when we had to circle around SFO and the land at San Jose where they made us sit on the plane for an hour or two with no explanation (and forcing most people to miss connecting flights) thus stranding us in the SFO airport overnight.

Nutritionists have apparently just discovered that drinking soft drinks loaded with high fructose corn syrup will make you fat. Apparently, they also discovered that if you order the xlarge size instead of the small size of a nondiet soft-drink you will consume more calories.  What an astounding revelation.  Is this even news?

Offsetting Energy Consumption

September 13, 2007

I was looking at my options to offset our energy consumption. Granted, we use less than half the power that most households do but it seems like a reasonable thing to do. I looked for options on the HECO website but they do not offer a way to off-set energy consumption to consumers. I did a bit of searching online and finally found the Sterling Planet - Green America program which is exactly what I was looking for but could not find. This way, I will be able to offset 100% of our energy consumption each month which is healthy for environment, us, and my business. I am just glad to have found something better than not doing anything regarding our power consumption. Given that Hawaii mostly uses petroleum for fuel I am definitely glad to do even a small part to reduce the impact of using petroleum as a fuel source. I encourage everyone to sign up for this service - it is a responsible way to offset your energy consumption and you don’t really have to *do* anything…

For my friends in Atlanta - Sterling Planet is actually located in Norcross.

I need to talk my parents into doing this. They use about 2200 kwh per month - that’s three times more than the national average…

Top Referrers

September 8, 2007

Naturally, I am always interested to look at my website stats to see who came here, from what search engine, etc. This time, I was most interested to look at my website stats to find my top referrers. Among some of them were Australia, Sweden, Netherlands, Singapore, China, Japan, Norway, Brazil, Switzerland, Italy, UK, Czech Republic, Seychelles, and others - I wish those people would post as it would make for a most interesting discussion.

I also found some somewhat disturbing stats. Here are a couple of other visitors: US Military (16 visits this month) & US Government (1 visit this month) and ARPANET (15 times this month). Last month, the US Military visited 2 times. Am I becoming a threat? (lol) Am I on some list of potential terrorists? It is certainly not a secret that the US Government tracks the movements of environmental and animal activists. However, I do not belong to any organized groups - so it is curious. Perhaps, because of the current administration they are tracking all known vegetarians. Ha.

At any rate, I invite the US Military and US Government visitors to post and let everyone know why they had DU on the Big Island and lied about it, why so many feral cats on Mauna Kea have leukemia from DU, why the people living in Waiakea have been breathing in DU and have had problems [respiratory, cancer, etc], why they say DU is safe but have training videos that speak to the contrary, and what they are going to do about it? Feel free to post.
