When Grendel Attacks!

January 19, 2008

We went to see Beowulf this evening at the theater.  Such outings make me long for the culture of a large metropolitan city.  Nonetheless, this foray into “entertainment” was my idea. We read the critical reviews of the movie and it seemed like it was well received by both critics and the common folk.  This movie was so terrible it was like watching 300 meets Shrek.  I actually enjoyed both of those films but Beowulf is not intended to be a comedy.  They glossed over everything of relevance to the story and created a nude scene with a proverbial fig leaf when Beowulf fought Grendel.  The worst thing about the movie is that it was animated but not in a way that enhanced the film - like 300. All in all, I am glad that we only spent two dollars watching that movie.  Unfortunately, we wasted two hours of our lives that we will never get back…

Movies

June 25, 2007

I shall recount now for all to hear the movie horror that hath befallen me this week…

First, we saw Pirates of the Caribbean 3 at the theater  which was visually stunning but the plot was nowhere to be found.

Then, we saw The One with Jet Li, Idiocracy, and the beginning of Season 2 of Friends.  The One was not great - it was rather boring and the story was slow.  The martial arts left a bit to be desired considering that he outmatched all of his opponents because of his super human strength.

Idiocracy - where do I start?  It was humorous in the very beginning where the above average couple is talking about how having children is a big commitment and they do not want to rush into anything.  Then, the next shot is of a below average couple who is on child 15 (or something similar) who keep having stupid kids because they don’t think about the consequences of their actions.  The above average couple continues to age and they never have kids but they dumb people take over the earth.  After that, the movie was really quite bad and cheesy.  I think the bottom line is that humanity should change before they become stupid.  A public service announcement would have done nicely…

Then, Brian wanted to get Friends Season 2 (Disc 1) from Blockbuster.  We watched Season 1 but I am not sure if I really like the show - it seems too similar to Seinfeld in many ways but never as good as Seinfeld.

I think I am finished rambling.

Seinfeld

March 19, 2007

Brian has been making me watch Seinfeld on DVD.  I never even watched the show (or any show, really) when it was on TV years ago.  Brian thinks watching Seinfeld will put me more in touch with the “common man” and what they are thinking (or not thinking).  I do think it is an interesting show and it’s really not about “nothing” but rather about mundane everyday things in life.  We are also watching Voyager on DVD as well.  Wow, what a terrible beginning that show has - we are on season 2 and it is not really getting any better.  Brian says that it picks up at the start of Season 4 when they introduce Seven of Nine.  We shall see…  This weekend, we watched “Conan the Barbarian” with Arnold Schwarzenegger and it was a pretty good movie.  We have been renting a lot of movies lately with the Blockbuster online service - it is not a bad service but our DVDs come from California so it takes about 2-3 days to receive them which is quite unfortunate.  Oh well, we are busy anyway…

Brian left me! That is, he has gone on a trip to the Waipio valley and has left me at home by myself for 24 hours. Brian is going to plow taro fields or something and sleep in the dirt with a bunch of recovering drug addicts while they have no access to modern amenities. We are supposed to do an 11 mile hike tomorrow but I wonder if Brian will be up to it… I hope I will be up to it. I did not think I would be able to sleep last night but I think only getting 3 hours of sleep the night prior made it easy to rest. I ended up getting 10 hours of sleep and that was pretty nice.

I was thinking about going to see a movie last night but decided not to since Brian said he would go with me in a few weeks to see Pirates of the Carribean 2.

I also never thought I would say this but I actually think I like PHP better than Perl.

A to the point article about The Passion of Christ. While the article is brief, it gets to the point of the The Passion of Christ: it is nothing new.

Pretty cool story from space This story is about a giant diamond that exists in space. I just thought the story was interesting.

Chinese plans show up for building Libyan nuclear plansts. First the Libyans want to kill us. Then the Libyans want to be our friends. Now the Libyans want to build nuclear plants. Sounds kosher to me. ;)

Last evening I saw Undercover Brother, it wasn’t very good but it was funny on occasion.

On another note, I’m thinking about starting another business. I’ve been thinking about perhaps starting a brand of food items for vegetarians that would also include a vegan line of food and is completely organic as well. It’s *food* for thought ;)

Coding and re-coding this GUI is such a thorn in my side. I’m going to see Star Wars at 12 AM Thursday morning, w00t. Aside from that, I’m quite busy writing new material for the website, I’ll try and ad to the idiots section as well. I’m going to categorize the book section and add more critiques and summaries on books. I may throw in a movie section as well ;) I was thinking about adding a “my philosophy” section but I scrapped that idea due to the fact that it’s always evolving much like I am. I’m trying to become more minimalist, well in a sense. I think I only need water, food, shelter, clothing, air hockey, digital pool, dots, stun runner, energy vitamins, computers, and a heap of books, my pig, and that’s about all I need to survive. :P

I went and saw Spiderman last night and it was actually quite good. Everyone should go spend a few bucks and see it, it’s definetly a theater movie. Everyone going to see Star Wars Episode 2 on the 16th? Everyone who bathes regularly and isn’t a trekky that is…
