I HATE UPS. Previously, I liked UPS and I thought they were pretty good. Granted, they once destroyed a monitor I sold on eBay and absolutely ruined an iMac I sold, but other than those fiascos it was OK. The USPS has been worse given that the customer service is generally non-existent, they kick things around, and ever since Priority Mail became pricey, it kind of stinks. At least they are consistent with pick-ups and frankly, I have not had a problem with them lately, at least not from a business perspective. The fact that our mail guy throws packages across the parking lot to Brian is more of a personal matter anyway. But today, UPS has really done it. This is the LAST time they will get my business. They were supposed to pick up a package on Friday but they never came. I called this morning to get them to pick it up today. Here is how the conversation went with UPS:
“We never had you down for pick-up.”
“I paid for pick-up and requested a pick-up for Oct.28.”
“We don’t have you down. But we can schedule a new pick-up.”
“OK, good, then I want to schedule a pick-up for today. I will be home all day.”
“OK, we will pick-up the package by 7 PM.”
“That will be fine.”
“The pick-up fee will be $5.20.”
“I already paid a pick-up fee of $2.20 online.”
“No you didn’t.”
“Yes, I did.”
“It does not show up in the computer. We will just charge the credit card again for the $5.20.”
“Fine, OK.”
“Thank you for using UPS. We are sorry you had a mix-up about the pick-up.”
“No, thank you.”
I looked online and saw that I did indeed have a pick-up confirmation number that they told me I did not have. So, I called back.
“Hi, thank you for calling UPS, do you need to schedule a pick-up?”
“No, I need to talk to someone because of being charged twice for pick-up because no one picked up my package.”
“Oh, well that is why you are being charged then, because you ordered pick-up.”
“No, you do not understand, UPS NEVER picked up the package that I arranged to have picked up on Friday.”
“We have you down for today for pick-up.”
“Yes, I know that, however, I am referring to the fact that I paid for pick-up twice and I am only getting one pick-up out of this.”
“Oh, let me transfer you.” *click*
“Thank you for calling UPS, how may I help you.”
(insert story here)
“Do you want my Pick-up Request Number?”
“Yes.”
*gave pick-up request number
“Your pick-up never went through.”
“Yes, I am aware of that as I mentioned in the earlier part of our conversation.”
“Can I have your new pick-up request number?”
“They did not give me one as I called to schedule the pick-up over the phone. Can you not use my phone number to locate it?”
“Sure, I can use your phone number.”
*gave phone number*
*she then repeats my address to me*
“That is incorrect, you have left off the apartment number, my apartment number is ***.”
“Well, maybe that is why it did not go through.”
“You had two blanks and I put my address in the first street address blank and in the second address blank I put my Apt number.”
“Oh. I am going to have our shipping warehouse people call you within one hour.”
“OK, and what about my refund for the extra $5.20 I paid?”
“That’s why they will call you.”
“OK, that is fine.”
“Will you be home all day?”
“Yes, I will be home all day.”
“Until what time?”
“All day.”
“Oh, I didn’t know if you had friends…”
“What?”
“OK, you are all set and they will call you within an hour.”
“Thanks.”
“Bye-bye.”
Just now, the UPS pick-up people called.
“Hello.”
“Hi, this Kim from UPS calling about your pick-up.”
“Oh OK, great.”
“Sorry about not picking up your package on Friday. I am not sure why it did not go through the system.”
“No problem, I would just like to have it picked up today.”
“OK, we have you down to have it picked up by 7 PM.”
“Great. I will be here all day.”
“OK then, no problem, thank you.”
“Also, I needed to see about a refund for the additional charge I was billed today because of the pick-up since I paid for it online already.”
“OK, well I will see what I can do but you might have to wait for your credit card bill to come in and then call me to let me know. Here is my phone number in case you get charged for it again XXX-XXXX. I am local.”
“OK, thanks.”
“Thank you, Bye!”
Blah! They can’t even reverse incorrect charges? Come on. This is absurd.
Of course, part of the issue is that I am utterly exhausted. As Brian works on his dissertation we both have to stay up because the bed and computer are in the same room. Usually, we are averaging about 3 hours of sleep per night. So, he will work on his dissertation until 4 AM and then instead of finishing what he needs to do, he waits until the morning and sets the clock for 6 or 7 AM then gets up again to work on it. Then we go to the gym and he stretches and puts me through rigorous training workouts so that my body is an utter state of exhaustion. Just last night I made it through only 2 sets of squats before my legs started cramping up. My quads have NEVER cramped or even really gotten tired for that matter. I think I am losing muscle mass because of exhaustion, I feel so tired, and I can’t get any sleep. We usually get one good night of sleep per week but one 11-13 hour night of rest does not make up for a week of 3 hour nights.
